Undoubtedly the most beloved President of our time, John Fitzgerald Kennedy is remembered mostly through his words. Our collection of John F. Kennedy quotes celebrates the ideas and insights of our 35th President.
Born on May 29, 1917 in Brookline, Massachusetts, JFK was the second oldest of the Kennedys' nine children. A deeply competitive child, JFK excelled in English and History at Choate, the boarding school he attended.
In 1936, JFK enrolled at Harvard with his older brother Joe. Although Joe was considered more likely to succeed in family circles, Jack surprised everyone when he took a strong interest in politics and world affairs after his father was named ambassador to England.
The first official JFK quotes can be found in his senior thesis paper, entitled "Why England Slept," which was later published as a book. After enlisting in the navy and being shipped to the South Pacific, JFK became a war hero and was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Medal for leadership and bravery.
Although Kennedy intended to become a writer or a teacher, after his brother Joe's death in WWII, it was up to him to become a politician. In 1946 he won a seat in Massachusetts' eleventh congressional district. Afterwards, he served three terms in the House of Representatives, and in 1952 he was elected to the U.S. Senate. At 36 he married Jacqueline Bouvier, a writer with the Washington Times-Herald.
While recovering from back surgery, he wrote a book, Profiles in Courage, about several senators, who had fought for their ideals. The book won the Pulitzer Prize for biography in 1957, the year the Kennedys' first child, Caroline, was born.
On July 13, 1960 the Democratic party nominated JFK as its candidate for President. On November 8th 1960, Kennedy beat Richard M. Nixon. At the age of forty-three, Kennedy became the youngest elected President. Before his inauguration, John Jr., was born.
